The Texas County [Brethren] Church has also been known as the Mountain Grove Church and the Greenwood Church. It was situated just a few miles into Texas County and about 6 miles east from Mountain Grove which is on the Texas-Wright County line. The early church was organized on the Conrad Greenwood farm and the first cemetery, known as the Old Greenwood Cemetery was located on his farm. The first burial was in 1871 when John J. Oxley, husband and father of several children died unexpectedly from blood poisoning. Tradition has it that the Oxleys had stopped to visit the Greenwoods on a return trip from Kansas to Virginia in search for land. This Oxley family remained in the Greenwood area and contributed many members to the service of the church in MO.
