D.E. Troxel, prominent citizen lodge member, council-man and ex-mayor of Argonia
died tuesday morning at the Wichita Hospital. The body was brought to Argonia
by the Argonia Under-takers where the funeral was held a 2 p.m. today. Mr. Troxel
was manager of the Badger Lumber and Coal Company here since the year 1912 having
been formerly employed by the same company at at Conway Springs.
During the years that Mr. Troxel has been in Argonia he has not only proved himself
an alert and successful business man but was active in lodge and civic organizations.
He was city clerk from 1913-1919, served on the city council and was mayor from
1923 to 1935 and it was only at his request that another mayor was nominated.
It was during his administration that his predecessor Mrs. L.A.Salter was honered
by a very impressive program and the erecting of a monument to commemorate her
election, she being the first lady mayor in the world.
Elmer (as many of us knew him by that name) was of that kind pleasant, jovial
disposition without frivolity or lack of sternness that was necessary to make
on the sort of a citzen we are bound to admire.
As a philanthropist he will be remembered by those whom he assisted in their
time of need. As a neighbor, he did not ask with some "who is my neighbor?"
abut we always found him willing to be a friend to man. It was not with the spirit
of "see what I have done" that he went about the different tasks that
presented themselves, but he was willing to keep himself in the background and
let the deed do its own talking. Mr. G.M. Pohlenz said of Mr. Troxel: "Having
workded with him as council man and mayor and succeeding as clerk, I shall always
remember him as an honest, agreeable and concientious and I shall alway cherish
the hours we were priviledged to work together.
This writer feels sure that he speaks the sentiment of the entire community when
he says that we have suffered a great loss and our hearts go out in sympathy
to the bereaved ones.
