The Brethren Historical Library and Archives is pleased to make available this index to the obituaries published in the Gospel Messenger. The indexing began in 1988 with the idea of creating an in-house tool to help the staff and volunteers locate obituaries quickly. Because the index was conceived as an in-house tool, it was created as a WordPerfect 5.1 document, not as a database. As the work progressed, the Brethren Historical Committee recommended that the index be published. Since a paper copy of the index would be over 3700 pages in length, it was decided to publish the index on a CD-ROM.

Rosalita J. Leonard is to be commended for her work on the index while she was employed as the library technician at the Brethren Historical Library and Archives. It has been estimated that the total number of hours she worked on the index would equal 2-3 years of full-time employment. Her position was eliminated shortly after she completed work on the index, as part of an overall redesign of Church of the Brethren General Board programs., Volume: 81; Nbr: 26; Page: 31; Date: 06/25/32

The index can be searched by first name and last name, county, and by year and month. Once a name is selected, a digitized image of the original certificate can be retrieved.

This is an ongoing project and additional records will be added as they are transcribed and imaged. If the image of the certificate is not yet available researchers can request a photocopy of the certificate by contacting the Archives Reference Desk . For death certificates less than 50 years old please contact the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records.

When the United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812, Congress authorized the President to accept and organize volunteers in order to win the war. This database is a listing of men mustered into the armed forces between 1812 and 1815. Taken from records in the National Archives, each record includes the soldier's name, company, rank at time of induction, rank at time of discharge, and other helpful information. It provides the names of nearly 600,000 men.

These records were taken from Record Group 94 Records of the Adjutant General's Office, microfilm publication M602, a total of 234 rolls of film. Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR) Each volunteer soldier has one Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) for each regiment in which he served. The CMSR contains basic information about the soldier's military career, and it is the first source the researcher should consult.

This is a history of most of the eighteen townships of Monroe County, Ohio. The material contained herein was accumulated from the "History of Monroe County, Ohio," by H.H. Hardesty & Co., Publishers, dated 1882, articles from various newspaper files, and items written by interested individuals. Collating and printing of the history was made possible by the efforts of Mr. Harold P. Haley, secretary of the Woodsfield Chamber of Commerce, Woodsfield, OH. The draft cards are also a good source for finding immigrant information because all young men were required to register, regardless of U.S. citizen status, and since 1880-1920 was a high immigration period, a large portion of immigrant men registered and gave information of birth date, birthplace, and in some cases their father's birthplace and nearest relative.

These files contain cemetery and tombstone information, sorted alphabetically, that are found in the records of the cemetery or on its grounds.

The Civil War Service Records is a database listing of over 5.3 million men who served in the war. The records have been taken from microfilm stored at the National Archives. Records list Surname, Given Name, Middle Initial, Company, Unit, Rank-Induction, Rank-Discharge, and Allegiance.

Each soldier has one Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) for each regiment in which he served. Use the details from this record in conjunction with other Civil War research to record details, compare notes, and confirm data you have already collected. Keep in mind that a CMSR is only as complete as the surviving records of an individual solider or his unit.
