[from obit - Roy S. Cox]
Among his many fine qualities was his generous, friendly spirit. This of course
promoted friendship of the highest order. He knew that if one would have friends
he must show himself friendly. He leaves a goodly heritage to many friends in
precious memories.
Roy was a member of the Messiah Church of the Brethren. For the past 33 years
he has worked for the Union Wire Rope Co. and has been President of the Uniteed
Steel Workers Union Local 2916 for the past three years.
Roy was a great woodsman and enjoyed the great outdoors.
Roy Sylvester Cox (called "Vess" when young] , was a person of many
talents even though his formal education was limited. About 1952, during a
family reunion near Princeton, Indiana, grade books were found in the closed
and abandoned schoolhouse he had attended. These books, c. 1918, show that his
grades were very good.
He enjoyed telling stories and jokes and would keep his sons and anyone who would
listen, fascinated for hours on end with their telling.
He worked for many years as a faithful employee of Union Wire Rope Corp. and
served as president of his local union. He was highly regarded by both management
and his fellow employees as a fair and honorable person. "Not only have
you (the family) lost a good man, the company and the union have also lost an
irreplaceable person", said the president of Union Wire Rope Corp.
Roy was clown for the Rodeo Kids, a group of young horse riders in the Kansas
City area. He thoroughly enjoyed his role as clown with his horse Buddy. When
not dressed in his clown cloths, he was a very quiet person.
"Coon" hunting with his dogs was his favorite sport. He made several
trips to New Mexico on successful mountain lion and bear hunts with his friend
and guide, Hugh Olney, of Magdalena, NM. It was the privelege of his two sons,
Jack & Jerry, to be able to join him on these hunts.
His work with leather, building dog collars, saddles and anything leather qualified
him as an expert in the field. He built my (Jack) trick saddle, which I used
for many years, both while riding with the Rodeo Kids and in professional rodeo.
Roy Sylvester Cox died in St. Marys Hospital from cancer at age 56.
Clefa Ann Neighbors and Roy Sylvester Cox had the following children:
